You sound like you’re in the place I was 30 some years ago: writing a dissertation, but finding that way of writing in tension with how I really wanted to write. I resolved that tension by founding my own company (book packaging company), trying to write clean, simple prose, and avoiding the BS of academia. It all worked out. I’m retired now, writing a Substack, reading too many Substacks, climbing a lot of mountains, cooking, etc. Thanks for your intro.
Adding to my comments recommending Turgenev in the survey -- I'd love to hear more of your opinions on 19th-century literature, even if it's not your particular field! Your take on Henry James was a lot of fun -- what about other writers you "just couldn't/can't get into"?
It might be fun to write a bit about some books that I simply can't appreciate, no matter how hard I try, not just books that managed to convert me. Thanks for the tip--hope you keep reading!
I’ve been to Buffalo. The leaves don’t fall there; they shuffle.
Great news! Congratulations!
Thanks, Henry!
Thank you Isaac! Am I allowed to take the survey?
Of course! It's anonymous, so you can say what you really think.
